I thinking the other day what would the world be if fear was eliminated from it completely? Would we be better people who cared about others, and understood others? Or would be we reckless beings who cared none about others, and hurt them for the sake of fun or pleasure.
One thing is for sure. If we fear something, we never do it again. If by doing something unacceptable, someone gets punished, it is very rare that the person would do it again. And even if he does it, it would be near impossible that it would be done again.
The other thing is that if an individual stops fearing, he would be able to see beyond his fear. What I really mean is that the individual would be able to enjoy and learn from his surroundings, rather than just worrying about them 24X7.
But, what could the elimination of fear mean to a child? Would it make him more passionate about his environment , or would it make him a stupid being who fears doing nothing, and wastes the greater part of his time in pleasure activities?
I argue that if a child is made fearless, then, he would love to explore his capabilities, since exploring your new limits and capabilities make you feel happy. It's like discovering parts of you, and it opens up the wide variety of the possibilities for the future.
If not fearing has all these benefits, then why is it that we spent a huge part of our life fearing, worrying about an uncertain future, worrying about what others think of us, and simply worrying about our actions and heritage.
To me, life is all about experiencing. It's not about having positive or negative experiences, or about having good or bad experiences, but it is just about having experience. I believe that an individual actually grows when he experiences and deduce things from his experience.
In the end, I would say that fear is that virus, worm, and trojan horse, and everything else that corrupts you, hinders your working, and lessens your capacity to do things.
Wish you a happy fearless life

However, if the whole world was to be without fear, why would other people need to care about their fellow man? Look at it this way: there's no fear of standing alone in the world, so why have friends to lean on when you need them most? Why should we, as people without fear...fearless...need anyone other than ourselves to survive? We fear nothing, so we need nothing. If we never fear for one another, how could we get through cancer? Vagabond living...murders...all this would go on and we, collectively, would be of the thought: "What's the point? We're going to die one way or the other..." Or we would just live life without anticipation...that's dead. It's only going through the motions of life and that in itself would be something we ALL fear, not fear itself, as the cliche states.
ReplyDeleteThis is a world where fear is needed. The world may be in an uproar where fear is involved: sky high murder rates, medical epidemics, recessions and depressions; yes, it's disturbing and can cause a more volatile way of life.
But a world without fear, is living in a world where we link our fingers with those of the cold hands of death with no worry whatsoever about getting frostbite. Family not being family, "friends" being even less than "associates..."
Fear is anticipation: the thrill or the horror of success or failure. Sure, we'd be able to get more things accomplished without it but that steals the life out of living.
Anyway, before I ramble for too long...^^;
According to the psychology lecture that I have just heard, fear is an anti social emotion. Now, why is it so, and what caused it to be so can be easily understood by the concept of evolutionary psychology, but I guess we don't need to discuss that here.
ReplyDeleteThere's a huge difference between love, fear, doubt and selfishness. We fear because there are certain things because of heuristics, the hardwiring of certain things in our brain. It's plays out in the modern scenario in such a way that the things that happen to remind us of our evolutionary trouble and pain are the things that we fear the most.
But, apart from psychology, i can question your idea on the level of philosophy.
People who tend to have free minds are not those who tend to kill others, and cheat others, but they are those who live harmoniously with others.
Consider this, if a man is fearless, then why would he fear death. If he doesn't fear death, then doing harm to others so as to survive would be pointless for him.
